I tried out my new lens and was surprised with its ability under ambient light in a brighly lit mall

Well that surely has my mind made up in getting that lens for sure. I have the *ist DS and with the 1.5x crop factor it is really a 75mm lens which will do great for indoor soccer shooting. I understand that this is not an action shot but the clarity and detail in this kind of lighting makes this a very good shot.

Is this your son by the way?

I would say for indoor fast action shots, fast lens may not be the answer as the shutter speed has to be like 180 or 250 at least.
May be another zoom with flash is the solution.

I took that pict over 30 ft away (1/180, asa 1600) and my flash was on full blast - you have nothing to worry about harsh flash lighting as it is so far away. The main problem is camera shake and shutter speed.
