I took this photo of a mate having a cigarette in my back garden (they're chucked out there if they want to smoke). The only light was my outside wall light, which threw a nasty orange glow on his face. I changed it to B&W and adjusted the grey slider on the curves to throw some of the background into darkness, then used the history brush to paint the glow back in.

Any thoughts? A bit too empty, maybe?

I like this image a lot. The highlight on the bridge of the nose is still a little blown - don't know whether you can do anything about it.

The only other thing that you'd ideally have is a nice wisp of smoke lit up in front of him.

All in all, a very nice capture, and the B/W conversion works nicely.

Best.

i like this shot as well.. very moody and seems to capture a very thoughtful look to your mate..

i think a closer crop is in order though.. leave the proportion of deadspace in front, just take a bit off of all 4 sides i think..

I hope I do not offend anyone...but I could not help but imagine 2 great photographs combined. This one and the smoke portion from Mmmmm....smells good E.S. Crawford.
I did PS them together but I hestitate to post the result without permission from both.

I was thinking of doing something similar myself! In fact, it's on my hard drive but I didn't want to post either! Feel free to post any amendments you like of any of my shots. If we get the ok from ES Crawford, we'll compare results!

Thanks for the comments guys, always appreciated.

Cheers.

I like this Frenchy - not quite sure what feeling it invokesbut it is effective. Nice capture.

style="BACKGROUND-COLOR: #000000"The non-smokers in my house know that they should feel free to go outside anytime I light up :G

Nice picture!! Great idea for it too. I'm with Steve on this one though, I can't decide on the feeling either, and I too think it would be really cool if you had some smoke like from Scott's picture trailling from the cigarette.
