Going for an old postcard effect

JunixRose Mar 11, 2006 3:30 PM

I really like this image. The old postcard effect comes through very nicely. How did you get the colors to go into the partial sepia you seem to be using. Was that a filter or post processing?Nate

That's so nice a composition. You seem to have attained the effect you were after. The carriage, the trail on the snow, the branches and fences catching snow...Very nostalgic and tranquil indeed.

I like the composition, but I don't like the dots that look like water drops on the lens.

Hey, I grew up in London, Ontario.

They still drink beer there?

Hi JunixRose and bahadir, thanks for the comments. The colours were pretty subdued since it was a very grey day but there is a fair amount of post processing involved (levels, warm-up filter, duplication of levels, etc...) It's a funny image in that most photographers dislike the falling snow but everyone else remarks ( unprompted) how they love it. For me, this image holds another secret. A couple days after this was taken, I lost my hard drive to a malfunction and I found that my backups were corrupted. I lost 1500 shots including the master electronic version of this one.

Terry... yes we still drink beer ( it is a University town after all)... I bet some of the old watering holes are still open!

Really nice shot, great atmosphere and you achieved what you set out to. I'm with Terry though - not a fan of the artificial snow. As you said, though, others will probably love it!

It's not artificial snow. It is real :)

The "problem" with the falling snow is that it looks as if you fired the flash, reflecting off the snow and making it glow.

It is a nice composition. Definitely an old time feel.
