Thanks for the help everyone - once I'm relatively confident that the screen is as close to correct as possible, I'll post some results. Also considering getting a second monitor to plug my notebook into.

Hi John,

If you have ever installed an Adobe product (Elements, Photoshop, Premiere) then you will have a tool in control panel called Adobe Gamma (or something similar - I am on my work laptop and don't have it on this one). I used this on my home laptop and it has made a huge difference and now when I send pics to the printer they come back very similar indeed.

Thanks Mark - I've used Adobe Gamma, but I find it a bit subjective. One picture will look exactly like the print, but then a portrait picture will seem to red or a BW will have a blueish tone. What I actually need to do is print a colour chart and then compare. Thanks for the suggestion.
