How can I improve this shot? I could not change the composition as I did not leave room:roll: Ive had various different comments on this one in other forums, ranging from wonderful to, background too dull, background to busy, not enough color on bird, wing blurred etc. Reason I ask is that I'm entering a wildflower comp and one of the categories is wildflower with wildlife or bird in shot. I thought this wasTHEONE as its been hard to capture a shot with an animal or bird on the plant. Or should I re-shoot and hope to capture another shot similar.?

This is a really good shot! The only thing that bothers me about it is that there isn't enought contrast between the birds head and bill -- which is largely black -- and the dark areas in the background foliage. Personally, I would like to see the dark areas in the foliage around the bird brightened a bit and a general blur of the background around the bird and flower. That would make the bird stand out better than it does now.

That's getting there!

Now, if you could just(!) maybe clone out some of those darker places in the background around the bird's head and beak and clone in some of the lighter foliage so that the bird's shape isn't "lost"?

Easy for me to say, right? :G

With a less sharp background, now, you might be able to get away with doing some cloning that would look obvious on the original.

I hope that this competition has no strictures against this kind of "fudging."

I still prefer a less square look, how about this one

The thing that disturbs me is the unnatural BG, white is not the best that , for nature picks it should look natural and this isn't, I also cropped and rotated it and I guess it's the best that can be done

julie i think its a great shot, the only thing i would try is bluring the background to make the bird stand out a little more, if that is what your aim is.

Lady, your last edit looks the best of the lot to me. The bird's head and beak are better defined. If it were my pic, I might try out a few more edits of the last example with varying degrees of background blur to help nail down the level of detail that works for you the best.

Let us know how the pic does in the competition!
