hmm hi,

I gotta say B&W for sure. The colour version is well horrid, for a better word. To blown out in areas and too yellow and dark in other areas. The B&W conversion seems to eleviate that alot in my books. You might want to even try softening up the shot a bit, maybe the background some. And just do a quick levels adjustment.

Plus B&W's make better portraits imho. And something which you have taken is I think better suited towards B&W anyway.

I think it's very much personal preference on colour vs B&W portraits. I have had vastly differing opinions from people I have asked. Personally I think B&W works much better with a dark background, which this shot doesn't have, and I would lean toward using the colour. Hope you don't mind, but I've done a tighter crop on the face to eliminate the quite distracting busy background, and adjusted the levels to increase the contrast and brightness of the face.

Cheers,
Ollie

G'day,

ok well I thought I might as well try and give this a go as well. Not sure if you like what I did to it or not. But you get the idea. As mentioned a darker background would have made the shot better so I did some layering and masking and with a little bit of fudging here and there here are the results.

Hope you like, and hope you don't mind.

You have probably already made a decision on this one already. If it is for his mother, I have found sometimes older people have a preference for the nastalga of BW. However, for this picture I prefer the color. I like them both espially the last bw edit with white frame some one made. This gives it a real film process look. But, I thinkthe BW looses the feelings, the thoughts I see in his eyes and expression. The warm sun tonesoff the base of the guitar has to remain. The tight crop that cut this out is not good. The color version seems to be more in place with the photo and shows the time of day and the mood of the picture more. Also, the BW looks flat. Try Alien Skin - exposure demo for your BW conversion I like using Fuji neopan conversion.
