An early attempt while trying out a new camera. Any advice is welcome.

If it wasn't for the background this has the potential to be a nice shot.

The background just kills this shot. You could try blurring out the background, so the statues face becomes the more prominent image in this shot.

I know the face is in the foreground, but my eyes are drawn to the busy background, especially that post and the tree.

I am no expert, so I might be wrong about all this, but like I said, try taking out the distracting background, and maybe change the shot to black and white too, and it might appear a lot better.

As for composition, the image to me appears a little tight, the chin of the subject is just resting on the bottom of the frame, and part of the statues ear has been cut, but what distracts me more is what is in its head, I am left wondering is it a hat or a fountain, bird table, etc.

When I first started posting my photo's on this forum, a member told me, always, always leave room in your photograph for editing, and try not to shot the image too tight. I found this advice very helpful and it helped my editing and framing techniques.

Like I said, I am no Pro, my work on here shows that, and I am sorry, if it sounds like I am ripping your work to pieces, I am just trying to give you my perspective on the image.

Please feel free to rip the hell out of my work too.:-)

I thought it only fair to show you what I mean, so here are my two examples.

Sorry about the rough work, I did these in a hurry.
