Default Question on HP Photosmart 1315

I recently purchased one of these printers and have noticed that quality of the printed image is far superior if I print from an image from the PC as opposed to directly from the compact flash card. This is true regardless of whether or not I perform any editing with photo processing software. I e-mailed HP to ask whether or not this is to be expected and got an irrelevant, boiler-plate response.

Is this normal behavior? If so, why does it occur?

Thanks,

Gary
