they both sound like great printers. which is cheaper to operate ink consuption cost paper. do they use all photo paper or use propietary paper

I have inkrepublic R800 system and epson photo paper.

The Canons have been a little cheaper for ink costs. But the Canon paper is pricier and there isn't as much selection. You can use any photo paper you want, but you sometimes have to alter the color a little or find a profile for the paper.

I personally think the R800 is the slightly better printer. But unless you want to invest in a continuous inking system they are hard to refill.

The Canons are very easy to refill and there is excellent ink available. That is enough cost factor for me that I will likely stay with Canon for a while. I do lust for the Epson R1800, but I would have to include the cost of a continuous inking system.
