Default Direct to CD-R printing - What's the story??

In North America is it possible to buy an inkjet with direct to CD-R printing capability like you can in Japan and Europe? Epson screwed customers in North America by releasing the inferior 960 many months late instead of the 950 that has direct to CD printing. Now I've read reports that the Canon i850 sold in the U.S. doesn't have the CD direct print feature that the Pixus 850i sold in Japan has. When the Canon i950 arrives next quarter, will it also be neutered?

Why the heck are Epson and Canon doing this to their customers in North America?

In a very litigous society(the record companies) putting these options on would probably be the means of getting sued by someone.
