I know I should have made-up my mind by now and believe you me Ive been trying ...I just want a printer to print reasonably good quality photos thats cheap on the cost per page. Im almost decided on the pixma 4000 from Canon, the only small naging worry is that I may have to use a converter and run it off a car battery and I know some of there other models are decribed as "stand Alone" but what does that mean? You know the problem with asking a question, youll always get an answer. Just if anybody knows

Hi Lola,

Standalone normally means that you can print direct from a memory card that you would plug into a printer or you could connect your camera direct to the printer.
In other words you do not have use a PC to connect to the printer.
