So, I have wasted about $10 of nice 61lb Matte Photo paper because my printer keeps rubbing the top edge of the paper and spreading black ink.

The printer doesn't do it every time, so when I print, it seems to be like playing roulette with my paper. It may, or may not be ruined. I can print about 4 pages before it starts doing this though.

Now, I have opened the top and actually watched this happen. The scraping is happening with the back end of the printing shuttle. It happens right as the end of the paper comes out from under the back rollers.

Any ideas about how to fix this? How can I clean the shuttle unit so it doesn't have ink all under it?

Open the cover, wait for the carriage to move tothe middle, then pull the power cord. This will allow you to freely slide the carriage sideways by hand and prevent the printer frommoving the carriage with your fingers in the printer. Remove the ink cartridges and then remove the print head (the instructions should be in your manual) by raising the lever on the right of the carriage and gently removing the print head. Thiswill allow you to clean the ink from the head, but take this opportunity to use a paper towel to clean the bottom of the carriage, print rollers and anything else that may have ink on it. You might also want to gently clean the clear plastic wipers on the far right that scrape ink from the bottom of the printhead (see the photos in http://www.nifty-stuff.com/forum/viewtopic.php?id=161) and blot up any excess ink in the sponges that cover the print head in its parked position.
