Does anyone know what causes banding when printingand how to avoid it?

It depends on thether it's horizontal or vertical banding.

Horizontal banding usually occurs only in the faster printing modes (which are really only useful for text) and pretty much can't be fixed -- cause is the same as when spray-painting and not overlapping your strokes enough.

Horizontal banding in higher quality prints may be caused by blocked or non-functioning head nozzles.

Vertical banding is often a matter of the ink not drying fast anough and being affected by feed rollers etc. -- fix here is usually by matching paper and ink.
