I am novice user of the digital cameras and I am looking for a digital camera to photograph the carpets we manufacture with a remote control feature.

Here are the requirements:

- Camera will be mounted on the ceiling

- The distance between the camera and the laptop is approx. 60-80 feet.

- Wide angle lens to photograph wide/long carpets

- Zooming in & out via the remote control software (possible?)

Can anyone recommend a medium and a high budget solution?

We set up our supplier with a Nikon S2 Pro. The problem with that is (as far as I know) no live video, no zooming via the software and the FireWire cable 4-to-6 pin is only 32 ft.

I see there is a bunch of cameras with decent remote capture software. They use USB cables... What is the maximum length of USB cables? Is there any ways of extending this distance?

Thanks in advance to everybody!

You may want to check out this solution (I have not tried them, but they look interesting). It allows you to extend the distance of USB via active repeater technology (normally limited to 5 meters/16.4 feet):

If this works, it should open up your choices considerably (Canon models with remote capture software, etc.).

umm...may i ask why you need to be 60 feet away from the camera?

my Canon G2 is old.....4 mp....but you can get a wide angle converter for it...and the remote capture software can zoom (if i remember correctly...)

i'm guessing the G5 would do the same...

Sounds familiar... we have a couple customers doing similar operations... operating rooms, flooring, leather processing...

Using a camera tethered to a PC running a remote capture program is the most obvious solution, and you can use USB repeaters to extend the cables. Many Canon cameras can do this, as well as most SLR cameras.

You can also use a variety of cameras, such as the Nikon Coolpix line, with the DigiSnap 2000 remote controller. For this patricular application I'd recommend the AC Power option, with the SnapUSB accessory, to allow switching between remote contol and USB download to a computer.
