G'day mate

To me, the 85mm f1,8 lens is a 'specialist' lens and you would need some very good reasons for buying it. And, as it is a manual lens you will get best results via tripod & studio usage

The 50-200mm lens is more of a general purpose lens that covers the portrait range of 60 ~ 105mm nicely. If it also is AF then I would go for it

Hope this helps a bit
Phil

I would rather have the Samsung 45mm f/1.8, you may want to research this one

3d is a gimmick to me, maybe not to others, the 2d only 45 is cheaper and reported to be a very nice lens

I sent you a pm

G'day mate

You say 1) you want a lens for portraits, and 2) you are not a studio guy as you will be taking all your photo outdoors

In my photo workshops I have several portraiture modules. As most students arrive with the SLR kit lenses of 18-55 & 70-250, one of the modules is for students to take a passport-style photo using 50/55mm and after stepping back several metres, using the long zoom at 100-135mm for as second portrait

The reasoning for this exercise is to notice the change in the shape of the face, [nose, eyes, cheekbones] and the change on depth-of-field bokeh as you move a little bit away from the subject

Students are generally amazed at the difference - and then use the long zoom around 100-120mm for their outdoors portraiture

Hope this helps a bit

Better? Who knows, but the 45 is about the same money and gives you AF,

Im not trying to convince you of anything, just saying theres other options,

isnt it great to have choices
