Dear Arvind,

Thanks for the EXIF data from the Digimax i5.

Also thank you for the suggestions re which camera models to choose; we do seem to have very similar requirements in digital cameras.

Apart from having more megapixels (which is not important to me) the Panasonic FX9 also has a much higher resolution LCD display and that is important to me:

FX9 LCD display resolution = 207,000 pixels,

FX8 LCD display resolution = 114,000 pixels.

If you set greater than 200,000 pixels as a minimum requirement for the LCD display then there are hardly any cameras left! None of the Canon ones make it which is a pity! So far as I can see the only ultra compacts that have a 2.5 inch high resolution display are:

Samsung i5, Panasonic FX9 (to be released 25 Sept), Kodak V550, Olympus Stylus 800, Sony DSC-T7, and that is about it :!:

By the time you you throw in a few other requirements like good movie mode and the fact that I don't like Kodak it only leaves the first 2.

You asked about prices in Australia:

Panasonic FX8: around A$ 530 (US$400)

Fujifilm F10 : around A$620 (US$470)

Samsung i5 : around A$495 (US$375)

So you can see why I like the i5 especially as it is also the most compact.

P.S. I particularly liked the photo of you and your lovely wife (No. SSL 10203, No7 of 38.

Hi Arvind,

I just found a comment in a forum on dpreview.com where an owner of a Canon SD400 cracked his display and Canon replaced it for him free of charge! :-)

Try this link for more info:

What is the story with your Digimax i5? Have they fixed the cracked LCD for you?

I am still tossing up between the the Digimax i5 and the Panasonic FX9 (which is supposed to be available next month).

Arvind,

Thanks for your reply about the Digimax i5 woes.

I do very much appreciate your comments and recommendations and so I think I will wait for the release of the Panasonic FX9.

Interestingly my son (who lives in Perth, Western Australia) is currently looking into buying either a Panasonic FZ20 or the FZ5 - both very well regarded cameras!

Note that the FZ5 is a more recent camera and quite a bit lighter but it does not have manual focus like the FZ20.
