Re Samsung:

I just finished an excellent piece in Fortune Mag on Samsung.

They are really hard chargers and now directly compete with Sony.

We shall see

I am aware of Samsung's prowess in electronics...my DVD/VCR is Samsung, and they make good TV's, big screen TV's, which I guess are like huge LCD screens...

But, experience in home electronics for decades may not tranlate into competence in the field of digital cameras...

While we have yet to see the 815, with 15X zoom and large LCD screen, I must ask this:

Is Samsung a company that one can trust to make a good digital camera, or should they be given a few years to establish themselves...

It pays to remember that Korean car companies like Kia and Hyundai made garbage for vehicles in their first few years...they learned from their mistakes and now Hyundai has a rep for good cars...

Does the same analogy hold for digital cameras???

Who knows...

If you preorder from Amazon, you get 30d to try it out before you have to return it or keep it.

Here is my take on the Pro815 after the Official Samsung samples have been released:

It seems many forum posters (elsewhere) are mimicking DPReview's Phil Ashley's comments about the official Samsung Pro815 samples.

I printed the image of the first model.
At 100% you can see the pores on her face,
you can see the white thread on the black shoulder strap, you can see the hair fuzz along her right arm (left side of the image).

The colors look natural without having seen the actual model.

You can see the individual lower eyelid lashes, all detail of the eyebrows.

One problem, is the lighting used for this image. The flat panel strobe (visible in her eye) washes out color across her face. This type of lighting is too broad for the subtle Oriental features of this young lady.

This image seems pretty good for a 2/3" sensor.

I don't know if it is worth $849 US, nor if it is any better than my F-828.

With the Fuji S9500/9000 and Sony R-1, Samsung has certainly missed the timing of the digital camera market.

On the Samsung Oficial Sample Site, a V.P. indicates a real professional camera will be introduced in 2006. How do they sell the 815 when mentioning a new camera in 2006?

I suspect Samsung, a big company, is only having a trial run with the 815 to set up distrbution etc for when they introduce their 2006 camera. What other logic could explain what we are seeing?

Regards, Niholas

Hi NickPhoto123,

Thanks much

You have brought up some most interesting points.

It sounds like pic quality is solid!

Also, "motives" are unclear re Samsung and its 815.
