Focusing on distant objects HD1010

How well does your camera focus @ infinity while zoomed in either optical or digital? I took this pic of the moon when it was near full last month and it seems pretty good for digitally zoomed. I had to use manual exposure to prevent the image from being over exposed. Sometimes I feel like the lens stops short of infinity. What are your experiences?
