Is high-speed memory req'd to shoot video or will a regular SD card do it?

A regular SD will do. You will benefit with faster cards, only slightly with response times, mostly with transfer speed to your PC.

I just buy the cheapest cards I can off newegg.com and haven't had a problem

The Sanyo's are designed to work with regular SD cards and may not even work with some highspeed cards from what I have been reading. So there really is no advantage apart from perhaps in a PC card reader as Caelum said.
