Amazon. com has 24 customer reviews on the Sanyo HD1. A couple of these are very good, indicating that when the camcorder works, It' s a good one. Several are good and bad with the usual knocks on these small hybrid units, such as low light recording, auto focus, image stabilazion etc, problems that most of usare willing toaccept as a trade off for size and convenience.

However, the last five user reviews posted don't even get to the fine points. They are all the same,.....complete black out of the LCD display, rendering the unit completely inoperable. Some people had this happen to their camera, returned it and had it happen to the replacement camcorder.

Now we have the HD1a coming out soon. True, they have changed the type ofLCD on the newer model but reports don't indicate that theymade this change to improve reliability. Some say it's to save some $$$ on the mfg.

Surely, Sanyo should step up and address this problem. Do they recognize the problem and what are they doing to fix it in the HD? What have they done to fix it in the HD1a.

Sure would like to hear from you, Sanyo. Some of us want to buy this new unit but need some sort of assurance that reliability has improved.

The blacked out screen on the HD1 has nothing to do with the monitor, so that is not why the monitor was changed from OLED to LCD. It has been formally announced that Kodak and SANYO have closed the OLED factory that they both jointly shared. Unfortunately, this was the factory for the OLED used in the original HD1.

As for the blacked out screen, the HD1 typically comes with a 1 year parts/90 days labor warranty. We have issued a directive to our service department to extend and honor the limited warranty for one year forlabor as well for cameras that experience the blacked out screen issue.

Since this was a limited issue in the production of the HD1, it should not affect the HD1a product. I am using two of the oldest HD1's in production and neither have experienced this issue.

Thanks for the response, Sanyo! The problem with the black screen, as you say, seems to have cropped up after an initial release of these camcorders and, hopefully, is limited to just a bad batch. The extension of the warranty period to one year is good business on Sanyo's part.

I'll be anxious to get my hands on an HD1.
