When I connect the C40 to the computer, Explorerlists the video clips as QuickTime files which I drag and drop onto the HD. I haven't bothered to install the C40 software, as I am already able to view and save the video.

However, are QT files suitable as a means of storage of video for later conversion to DVD, or am I missing something? Thanks.

What you see issimply Explorer's file association:Quicktime is the media player that is currentlyassociated with.MP4 files. When you installed Quictime, it prompted you which files it should be associated with, and .MP4 files was one of them. You can change file associations easily. If you install another media player capable of playing back .MP4 files, it might prompt you to associate it with .MP4 files in Explorer.

Bottom line, the files remain ISO standard MPEG-4 .MP4 files. Quicktime is just the currently associated media player on your PC.
