Isn't that strange since Microsoft already licenses the codec to playback DVDs. It must be because they don't want people to "decrypt" DVDs onto their XBOX. But then again, considering they just added support for Xvid / Divx, that doesn't make sense. At that link, point 10.mentions MPEG2 is supported on the Xbox via Media Center?

I am using the Vegas 8 Platinum trial and it works very well for rendering 720P 60 FPS or 1080i from my HD1000. I like the 60 frame per second WMV9 output when played back through my Dlink DSM 520 Media Lounge. The high motion videos are much clearer in this format. I don't quite understand how my Sony rear projection 1080i TV uses 60 frames per second at 1280 x 720 though. But, the video is definitely smoother in high motion scenes. The same file when played with Windows Media Player shows 59.97 frames per second.

Sony Vegas 8 Platinum is on sale at Amazon for $89.99 right now plus a $30 rebate from Sony if puchased by 12/8. That is only $59.99 shipped (free) for Vegas 8 Platinum.

Be careful not to confuse "Sony Vegas Movie Studio" (entry level product line)with "Sony Vegas" (pro product line). Vegas 8 is five times more expensive than Vegas Movie Studio 8. The Amazon price you quoted is that of Sony Vegas Movie Studio 8 Platinum, not Sony Vegas 8. (Actuallyit looks like since version 8 Sony decided to add the word "Pro"to the Vegasproductname to help distinguish it).

Correct, it is Vegas Movie Studio 8 Platinum. That is the trial that I used to render the HD1000 video from 720P 60 FPS to WMV9 60 FPS. It works great for that.

I have found that it doesnt do much with MP4 rendering except for low resolution ie. for phones and portable medis players and internet video. There is no option for High Def MP4.

Mpeg2 works pretty well also. Because of my media center extender I find the WMV9 format very useful.

I have Nero 8 for High Def DVD creation in 1080i which works quite well.

I got the best results rendering 1080 60i to MPEG2 format but got pretty good results rendering to WMV9 format that can be played on the 360 which is good but it does not look at good as the MPEG2.

No such thing as a HD DVD Burner yet, but I do have Ulead dvd Movie Factory 6+ and that lets me burn HD DVD to Dual layer DVDs. They play fine on my Toshiba HD DVD player. Only get about 25 minutes on a dual layer disk though. That of course is 1080i MPEG2 video.
