SOLVED: Reinstall Quicktime.

took some clips with my HD2 but can't edit them in vegas.

In Vegas 7 it says
"An error occured while opening one or more files.
An unexpected error has occured.
File ....could not be opened"
In Vegas 8 which I just purchased it says
"An error occured while opening one or more files.
The file format plugin for the specified format was not properly initialized
File .... could not be opened"

I tried enabling more codecs in ffdshow. I have enabled pretty much everyhing in both the VFW decoder and Video Codec codec menus.
I have set the Properties of the video template to 720 30p.
On the web somewhere it suggests that "The file format plugin for the specified format was not properly initialized" indicates that the software has not been registered. And indeed I had not yet registered. But when I did, it did not make any difference.

And I think that some people on the forums are having success with Vegas 6.

I am using the top, pro version not the movie studio (which by the way, I liked at least as much if not more because of the show me how function)

Any suggestions?

Hi, I am using Vegas 6.0d,and it does notappear to be usingffdshow to open non-AVC MPEG-4 files, either it's using its own internal codec or perhaps Quicktime's engine? I don'tknow. But do you have Quicktime or Quicktime alternative installed just in case?

You could try, justas atest, transferring thevideo to an AVI container using MP4Cam2AVI to see if you can openan AVI containing the exact same MPEG-4+AAC. Or try, again just as a test, temporarily renaming the .MP4 extension to .MOV to see if it works like that.

I realize this is not much help, but just fyi I can confirm that I can edit both MPEG-4 part 2(SP)and MPEG-4 part 10 (AVC) MP4 files with Vegas without issues.

Dear Caelum

Thank you very much indeed. I tried renaming to .mov and that could not be opened either so I re-installed quicktime as you suggested, and now I can open the mp4 files from the camera.

I would not have known that Vegas was using quicktime to open the files.

Very gratefully

Hey, that helps, I have the same problem and tonight I will re-install quicktime.

Any particular version or the latest?

Egmont Oct 29, 2007 5:45 PM

Well, it sure worked.

Great. I was trying to post to say that I just downloaded and installed the latest version and that I think that it did not work because I had chosen not to install the codecs in the past.

I always have difficulty logging in to this forum (since about a year ago) and have to delete the cookie using the linkprovided and even thengo around in a circle a couple of times.
