I have had an HD1 for a few years now and never noticed barrel distortion. However, since it has a greater zoom than the hd700 it should (in theory) have more barrel distortion, correct? I did a google search and could not find anyone really complaining about this distortion on the HD1 or HD2. Is there some sort of barrel distortion measurement or something to compare the HD1/HD2 and the HD700?

Barrel distortion is "normal" and I do not think that is something to complain about.

H264 in HD720 is my reason to choose it. Earlier HD1 nad HD2 do not support H264.

H264 in HD720 and play directly in PS3 is my reason to choose it. Earlier HD1 nad HD2 do not support H264.
