Not super-professional and not a lot of bells and whistles, but here'sthe free downloads thatI've had success with:

1)KM Player (plays vids, extracts snapshots, etc without converting) google it or download here http://www.download.com/The-KMPlayer...-10659939.html

For editing:

2) Pazera (for conversion) http://www.pazera-software.com/produ...avi-converter/

3) Convert with Pazera (I'll give the settings I use), edit with Windows Movie Maker, then send to DVD with Windows DVD Maker... that's it!

With Windows Movie Maker, you can also save to computer as a HD mpeg file, upload to Youtube or Vimeo, etc... Example at http://www.vimeo.com/974821 On DVD, videos areeven better andsmooth as silk...

Toget started, just upload you vids to your computer. You can play them right away with KM Player. Experiment by right clicking on the KM Player screen while vids are playing to see the magnitude of things you can do.

Otherwise, after uploading, open Pazera, click top left "Add Files" and addthe filesyou want to convert. Settings are flexible. Bottom area settings -- where options are available, I use in this order as you look at the settings area: Mpeg, custom, mpeg2, 5000, 29.97, mp2-mpeg1-layer2, 128, 48000, 2-stereo, 1280x720-HD720... then click CONVERT at the top. Takes anywhere from a few minutes to several hours pending the size of your clips.

Once converted, open Windows Movie Maker, import filesto edit and create a DVD or save to computer... that's it!

Again, not a lot oflatitude with control, but super easy for basic dvd writing!:?

Glad to see new free options coming around. Kmplayer looks interesting because of its use of mencoder and ffmpeg.

Yes, the KM player is cool... you can also extract some phenomenal pictures right out the video with frame capture.

Good stuff!

So I downloaded the player and it's very jerky but the Nero 8 player that comes with the camera works fine.

So am I doing something wrong or is this particular player a resource hog?

Hmmm... don't know. I have a 2.8 dual core processor and 3 gigs RAM, so I don't know if that's why it plays smooth for me or if there's something else involved...

I poke around and try to find out.:?

Are you trying to play an interlaced video as against a progressive video. Not many players at this stage will play an interlaced video smoothly.
