Your HD1 should come with Ulead video editing software (probably the same Movie Factory 4) that supports MP4 video files made by the HD1. I don't use the MF4 that comes with my C6, but I took a quick look at it - it is a step-by-step wizard-type program that asks you what you want to do in every step, should be a breeze to work with. It has all the basic editing functions (joining, cropping out segments, transitions, subtitle etc) and it also convert the file for burning to DVD.

MP4 is not supported by all video editing softwares (but more are supporting it in their latest versions). I see that you already know about MP4CAM2AVI from Grunchy - the "converted" video file format from this program is compatible with DIVX MPEG-4 codec, and this format is widely supported by most editing softwares. In case you don't like the Ulead, you can try it on other softwares. I use VirtualDub (freeware) but this is not a "simple" editing software and not very user friendly. Sorry I don't have other recommendations.

Vegas 6.0

You can import the HD1's MP4 files directly.

Set the preferences to the apporpriate HDV resolution - even though the HD1 files aren't HDV.

Vegas also allows you to make a HDV Intermediate, so that editing won't be slow because of the MP4 structure.

When you are rendering you can choose to conform the original MP4 footage.

Don't bother with any of the bundled stuff - it will cause loss in image quality.

Well of course you have to try a simple video Editor PresentaVid.

It has some very interesting and useful puglishing features and since its a simple editor - its not an expensive one.
