This is a tip for those using vegas to directly import Sanyo .mp4 clips without converting.

The quicktime decoder it uses to import the clips got pretty agressive "imageimprovement" built in so i would recomend to convert them first and import as DIVX/XVID instead.

Also it does not show accurate gamma/colors ?

Pictures saved from inside vegas.

1. Clip imported with DIVX decoder

Imported with QT decoder

Notice the texure on the ground to the left is smudged out and the girls skin loose some detail ? its not video-grain on the ground its acual texture that loose detail .

This is expecially bad becouse you are going to re-encode it after editing that sometimes will use imageimprovment again ! and loose even more detail.
Nothing agains imageimprovment funtions in the codec (that you have manually control over) but it isnt good when its done when importing before final encoding..

And to add, while editing mp4 directly inside vegas, my system really slowed to a crawl. I got better performance converting the files first w/ mp4cam2avi.

What did you do to import them as DivX? I'm somewhat new to video editing in general, and am just finishing up editing all my miniDV videos. Soon I hope to be moving onto my Sanyo Videos.

Is it just as simple as running them through mp4cam2avi first? or are there other steps you are suggesting people take?

You can use mp4cam2avi but you have to change a setting. (edit->settings)

Write DIVX in the place i have made the red circle.

You have to have the Divx codec installed for it to work.
