Did you do as I suggested above? Also, in the setup menu make sure the external flash is set to "OFF". I assume you have the flash popped up.

You have the silent mode turned on in the setup...

You have the silent mode turned on in the setup menu. Silent mode is a quick way of turning all sounds and flash off if you are in a theater or some other venue where you cannot use flash or sounds....

I am considering a teleconverter also, but I see the TCON-17 is a 55mm thread, which I assume would need a converter. Any reason why we would not use one of the Canon units that are listed...
