Your right Bynx. But, holding the camera against the side of the lifeguard tower greatly helped me hold the camera still long enough. I didn't bring my tripod.

I think the sensor is the most fundementaly important feature for high quality photos. But you can't discount the glass either.

Number 2 is a nice photo of the old farmer....

Number 2 is a nice photo of the old farmer. Number 1 maybe a more realistic photo of him, but it's not quite as pleasant as number 2. B&W definitely works for this image. Nice choice.
