looking at the 50-500. Price is good and some reviews are good as well. Anyone have any first hand knowledge of this lens? How does it compare to the Tamron 200-400? thanks.

Go to the Pentax DSLR forum and bring up posts from The Hotel, he's been posting some outstanding shots with his Sigma 50-500mm lens. Really SUPER shots. Ask his opinion and I think you'll be happy, especially after seeing his shots with the lens.
I'm considering one myself in the not too distant future after seeing the results That Roger ( the hotel ) is getting with it. I've seen the lens advertised for $999.00, which doesn't seem out of line. I hope this helps.

I have one that I use on my Canon 20d it is a nice lens, big, and heavy, but really nice. I've heard the Tamron 200-500 is a little sharper, but this lens holds a pretty close second to it and it has the advantage of HSM so you get faster focusing. The Tamron 200-400 is a little older lens than the 200-500 and not nearly as sharp as either the sigma or new Tamron 200-500.

I hear the new Sigma 200-500mm f/2.8 comes with Arnold Schwaznegger to carry it aroundfor you

Geez! Have you seen the size of this thing? My telescope is smaller...

Hi - I'm using the Sigma 50-500mm in combination with my Nikon D50 and am very satisfied with it. Bit heavy @ 1.85kg but have managed to take shots handheld. The build quality of the lens is excellent. At times I do wish it was more light sensitive but this can be compensated by increasing the ISO value.

Cheers - Herman

PS. I don't know what camera you are using but the HSM feature may not work on cameras other than Canon, Nikon & Sigma (check with manufacturer).
