I have a Nikon D40 , so lens AF is all i got
Then you have no choice but the Sigma 100-300 f/4 EX with HSM (i.e. Nikon AF-S equivalent)!
Well i do have a choice :

Sigma 100-300 f/4
Sigma 70-200 f/2.8
Sigma 80-400 OS
Nikkor 70-300 VR

I intend to buy the Nikon DSLR which is going to replace the D80 in a couple of months , so i might just as well try to buy the best lens to fit both my actual D40 and my futur D:?
I`m taking so much time to decide which lens to buy because i don`t want to make the wrong choice , lenses are made to keep , it`s just the bodies that we like to update from time to time :-)

Between the Sigma 70-200 f/2.8 and the 100-300 f/4, I'll go for the 100-300 if you intend to shoot mostly at 300 and higher. The 100-300 f/4 take a 1.4x TC quite well and remain sharp even compare to the 80-400 OS @ 420mm...
The 70-200 however will degrade a bit a bit with a 1.4x - Only get this lens if you need f/2.8!

I can't cross compare the 100-300f/4 to the Nikkor 70-300 VR since they don't have the MTF for the 100-300 in nikon mount posted

Well , i`ve heard from many sources that this lens will have AF on my D40 , it is not HSM but it has an inbuild AF

Thanks for the input.
