The manual for the dsc-h1 says to use the 1.2v ni-metal-hydride pair enclosed or the new oxy batteries that are rated at 1.5 volts each. When contacted Sony says that regular Alk AAs are not supported on warranty. This makes no sense. Will they harm the camera?

They will not harm the camera, they just won't power it for very long. NIMH batteries are better at sustaining a charge. Regular alkalines will discharge very quickly, probably less than 30 shots due to the high power requirements of digicams. Even if you could get 200 or more shots on regular alkalines, their total cost over any extended period of time would be outrageous. NiMH's are only a couple of bucks more and will be good for 1000's of cycles.
