How do i switch to black & white with the H1??

just found it!

First make sure your camera is in any shooting mode
secondly push 'menu' button on camera back
thirdly there is 4 position disk with push button in center - push left side of disk to the left to scroll through common settings
When you reach the very left of menu, you are at the very beginning and it is mettering settings.
From the beginning make 5th stop to the right and there is what are you looking for 'PEffect'
