Arcane question about Sony RM-VD1

I am interested in a Sony V3 but I require a camera with a decent range remote amongst other features. The Sonyremote the RM-VD1 remote commander features a 2.5mm mini plug and a 5 foot cord. I have been trying to find out from Sony with out luck if it could be extended with either a standard male to female 2.5mm mini cable or a 1/8 inch male to female cable and 2.5mm adapter.

Unfortunately their Sonystyle tech support/pre sales help have not been helpful asking me to contact an authorized service center.
