As Iwork in retail, this story does not suprise me. Although not a common occurence, it does happen, and Circuit City is not the only place that has been hoodwinked. The scam is a customer comes in and purchases a high dollar item, takes it home, replaces the item with something similiar in weight and returns it for their money back. The store doesn't check the merch, places it back on the shelf, and some poor customer buys the item. However, the customer who is complaining about purchasing the "nails" could also be the scammer. This is a tough situation for a retailer. Most would do what CC did, make the customer wait a little while..if they remain persistant, they are probably legitimate...someone working a scam is not likely to draw much attention to themselves. It sucks if you are the customer in this case, but you have to put yourself in the retailers shoes. As a customer, you should immediately check all merch to make sure everything is present before leaving the store....the burden of proof is on the customer in this case not the retailer.
