Hi,

My DSC-P71 doesn't startup. When I press the powerbutton a very short beep, powerled lits up for a split second, and no more action at all.

Since sending the camera to Sony for repair cost almost the same as a new camera, I want to try to repair it myself.

You can start by testing the fuses, there should be a sticker on the circuit board giving you the location of the fuses. I have also seen the problem of it powering on for a split secondon numerous P72's and P92's with the cause being a shorted LED on the LCD backlight... Good luck!

Ok, tested the fuses, all ok. Also had a look at the backlight of the display, seems to work fine. I also found out that I can get into setup, camera will start en display setup menu on the LCD.

I think the problem lays in the motordriverunit that has to open the cover that is in front of the lens.

I hope you can give me some more tips or hints.

OK, so you say the camera stays powered up in the setup mode... You can try to disconnect the cables that go to the lens and see if the camera stays powered on in the picture or video mode, this will prove that the problem is in the lens assembly if the camera stays on. Normally if the motor or gears are bad or if the lens is jammed, the camera will still power on but after a few seconds it will say "turn power off then on again" on the LCD.

Ok, done that and indeed: when I disconnect the motor/lensunitthe camerastays on! Now the only problem thats left: removing the lensunit. Seems like a hard job to do, I'll keep you informed.

Thanks for your help so far.
