I have a strange problem with my DSC p10 camera. after the startup tune the lens comes out fully, then the lens motor keeps running and the screen stays blank, then the lens closes and the message +beeb comes on saying turn off and on camera. This continues in the same cycle – I notice also that the image through the view finder is blurred, could it be that the camera cannot find a proper image because of dirt or a faulty image sensoror off.

Try resetting your camera (see your manual) -- it's inside the battery/memory stick compartment. Also ensure there are NO obstructions to the lens (check to make sure there is no dirt where it slides out or on the lens barrel itself).

If that does not correct the problem, more than likely at some point you wacked or pushed on the lens with your hand or dropped the camera. Generally, if the lens is obstructed or "cockeyed" in its slide, what you describe is what happens.

Your lens is damaged, and you can probably get forum member "cybershotnut" to repair it for your quickly and easily.

You can send it into Sony for repair under warranty if you do the online webform and put the purchase date within the past 3 months. =)

The problem was the autofocus guides on the outside of the lens housing, they had come off their track. putting them back on track and restarting the camera a few times fixed the problem.

thanks for all the thoughts
