Default F717 - need experienced help (shutter speed)

I own a F717 and take 100+ photo's of my daughters gymnastic events every other weekend. I cannot use the flash because of the event rules and I'm having problems getting pictures in focus, I cannot increase the shutter speed (because of no flash) - so I leave the camera on auto - most images are blurry. Any suggestions? Most shot are action shots.

Appreciate your time for feedback.

Default Shutter Speed

I have a Sony 707 and a Daughter thatís into Irish Step Dancing. So I have very much the same problem, Flash is not allowed and Light is always questionable. I normally do the following.

1. Change the ISO from auto to 400. (note My 707 is limited to ISO 400, 717ís goes to ISO 800) At ISO 400 I get more noise and I deal with that later.

2. I set the camera to Aperture priority mode and set the Aperture f2 (depending on the zoom the camera will go between f2 and f2.4).

3. Before Her Solo dance I pick an area on the floor I know she will more into, and set the zoom to frame that area.

4. I hold the shutter button half way (to get the camera to focus) and release when she come into frame. I never get 100% good photos.

After the Feis I normally need to work with the photos on the computer. I use ďNEAT IMAGEĒ to clean up the noise http://www.neatimage.com ,a very good program for working with noise. After that I use MGI PhotoSuite (The Software that came with My 707) I will Adjust Brightness and Enhance Colors.

This is what I do. There is better software out there then MGI PhotoSuite, and Iím not the Greatest, But I do get better pictures than other people in My Daughterís Irish Step Dancing School. Hope this helps, The Sony 707/717 are great cameras, and better then most in low light.
