The introduction of the New Sony WX-1

Well folks-

It appears that there will not be a replacement for the W-300 camera. Perhaps, the WX-1 is the replacement for the W-300, with its new 1/2" imager, CMOS imager, 24mm wide angle, and fast F 2.4 lens with 5X optical zoom.

I, for one will be watching the introduction and the first professional reviews of the new WX-1. It is gratifying to see Sony continue with the development of the new CMOS imager. The new WX-1 has much better high ISO capabilities than the HX-1, although initial photo samples appear a bit soft.

This camera looks good on paper but then again, they all do! It certainly has some improvements over the W300, as Sarah mentioned but I think the initial price is a bit steep ($350 for pre-order on Amazon). IMO, these little cameras should be priced below $300.

Tullio-

Just as the selling price of the HX-1 has come down in price markedly, I expect that after Christmas the WX-1 will be reasonably priced as well.

Yes, I too believe the price will come down some. However, last year the best camera deals I came across were between mid-late October and early December, not after Xmas.

Thanks for the advice, Tullio-

I will keep a sharp eye on the WX-1 prices from October through December.

Interesting comparison in the NY Times between WX1 and Fuji:

good read.

Good morning, Ian-

It is good to hear from you. Thanks very much for the link. Yes, I believe two important things have happened. (1) Sony has continued to work on their advanced CMOS image sensor. The development and market of 2 additional cameras (WX-1 and TX-1) show that they are committed to the CMOS sensor and that it has improved since the HX-1 camera. (2) Sony is finally moving forward again in small cameras.

The WX-1 camera is more interesting to me. However, I am sorry to see now more development of the W-300 successor at present.

Have a wonderful day.

Thanks for the link, Wirraway. The specs certainly look very good for the WX1. However, I have learned my lesson long ago to never trust them. What manufacturers claim may be far from reality. I want to read some reviews and people's opinions before seriously consider buying one.

I agree with you 100%, Tullio-

The proof is in the pudding. With the WX-1 being on the dealer's shelves next month, I am sincerely hoping that we will soon thereafter begin to see the professional reviews.

With the announcement of the new Canon S series camera which has P.A.S.M, I would expect Sony to react which would be the replacement for the W300, this WX1 has dropped too many features for example manual. and optical viewfinder which the Canon now has with the revised S90. However I feel the WX1 will sell very well indeed for the features it has.
