Today's quintessential7MP:

Sony's DSC-V3. Of course, this 7MP digicam takes gorgeous pictures in every situation I have thrown at it. But, if you are a professional, looking for the be all to end all in digital cameras, go get yourself a d-slr. You shouldn't be reading this anyway. But, if you just want to capture life as it's happening, read on. The case-build (light, strong metal everywhere, with solid controls), features galore (high quality movies that can, if you want them, fill up your memory card, color photos taken perfectly in the dark ala "NightFraming", in camera photo/movie editing, and two slots for memory cards: compact flash and Sony's Memory Stick) are reason enough to snatch this camera up. Ignore all the above features. The V3's Laser Holographic focusing system (you'll never have another blurry picture again)and its sheer photograph capturing speed makes this 7MP camera the one you want.

Does anyone care.. this is purely a subjective field.. There are too many die-hard fanatics out there

This doesn't have to do with loyalty to a company. It has to do with telling other people how great a certain model is. And many models from Sony have been fantastic. Better than any other company I've tried. I've had: Panasonic, Pentax, Canon, Fuji, Toshiba, and Sony and none of them other than Sony has rich, vibrant colors! Sony simply knows what they are doing with their digital camera technology. That is the point! I can't stand Sony's lack of knowlege about their products when you call their 800 number, they are courteous but they have not trained their employees to respond to customers at all! There is no loyalty to a company like that. But facts are facts and fact is: Sony cameras are the top of my lists for quality and color

Well said, Sola. Thank you.

This is my first Sony camera. I've had Minoltas and Canons in the past, and they were good cameras. I posted this primarily to help people that were in the same boat as me a few weeks ago: trying to decide which prosumer 7MP camera to buy. The DSC-V3 is an awesome camera, period, and has nothing to do with some fascination I have with Sony. I'll grant that picture quality and maybe the shape of the camera is somewhat subjective, but that is it. From the research I did before buying, you simply cannot buy a better camera in this classin terms of performance and features than this one. And the pictures are gorgeous...
