Sample shots from the new WX150

Sony made a new WX150 available for me to try out.

18MP, 10x optical zoom, 'G' lens, optical steadyshot, sweep panorama, Full HD video while simultaneously capturing full resolution still images. 3 3/4" x 2 1/4" x 7/8". 4.7 oz.

(Clicking on any of these will open the image in Flickr, where you can see the full resolution images if you want.)

Actually, when I click on any of those images, I see a Yahoo login screen that is apparently passed to a flickr login script somewhere.

So, those are not "public" links to image pages that you can see without being logged in to an account there.

I only see a screen prompting me to login instead.

Oops.

My bad.

Try it now.

They work now (no login required).

How did you like using this camera? I always carry a camera in my bag to avoid missing interesting shots. Usually a $250 or less Canon with a small foot print.

I'm thinking about replacing my Canon 300HS mainly to get the 10x zoom.

Care to write a quick mini review after using it?

Thanks.

The first day I used it outdoors, I was wearing a madras shirt. I could see the reflection of the pattern in my shirt off the LCD screen better than I could see the image I was trying to compose. I kept wanting to raise it to my eye so I could use the non-existant eye-level viewfinder. I was frustrated by the Intelligent Auto and the Superior Auto exposure modes because they took so long to process shots I had just made. I finally gave up and started using P Mode, which was much more responsive.

I had a similar problem with the burst mode. I was using it at my grandson's little league baseball game. It has two modes: it can capture up to 10 images per second for one second, or it can capture 2 images per second for a total of 10. I tried the 10 fps setting which works ok if the batter hits the ball, but it take so long to process the 10 images that, if the batter misses, you've got 10 wasted shots, and the camera is still busy when the next pitch is thrown.

The camera has lots of bells and whistles that I didn't try, and while the image quality was very good, and I liked the Sweep Panorama feature, for the most part I was frustrated with it.

But that's from a long time dSLR user.

The WX150 does have a custom white balance feature (only available in P Mode) I didn't expect to see in a P&S. It also has a real-time histogram available in the display, and ISO settings as high as 12800 (though I didn't try it.)

The manual is useless, and the built-in guide isn't much better.

I just added a few more shots taken at the Joint Services Open House Air Show this weekend:

Yes. It was created using the iSweep Panorama feature available in many, if not all Sony cameras.

Thanks for looking.
