Paul, which setting do you use the most? And under which conditions? I've been using the "s" mode and seem to like it. Pictures have been coming out pretty good. I love the twilight feature, took some pics around the house last night and they looked terrific.

Boring picture I know, I used the Handheld Twilight for this. I will try the S program. I want to know how to take pics where the background is blurry and the subject is clear.

Hello Paul
I don't know if there is a special mode in the HX1 which allows special effects as you mention (I havn't HX1), but may be youonly want to decrease the deph of field. The basic theory to decrease the d.o.f is :
- select the higher aperture (the smaller F number)
- increase the focal length (the zoom)
- decrease distance as possible

Here is an example with aperture max and zoom max :
The skier is rather sharp with very blurry background
