Does anyone know if Sony Changed the microphone when they came out with the DSC-WX1 relative to other models in the “W” line? Specifically, the DSC-W290 looks to have a different microphone which I concluded after looking at the placement of it. In the W290 it has 3 small holes and is the right of the lens while the WX1 has 1 hole and is to the left of the lens (pictures below).
This is important as I do a lot of recoding at very loud concerts with a lot of bass and the W290’s mic is incredible in this environment. While cameras like the T90 and T900 distort the sound to the point where it is inaudible. Anyway, if anyone has any info relating to the WX1 microphone I would much appreciate it. The Sony WX-1 microphone is in exactly the same position as it is on the W-290 model.

It does not look like it from these images. The W290 has a front mic whilst the WX1 has a top mic. But most importantly, the WX1 no longer carries the Zeiss brand lens. It comes with a Sony lens. I still think that the W300 is one of the best cameras in this segment.

I certainly do agree with you, Tullio-
It would be a shame if Sony decided not to continue with the W-series, where the W-300 is currently the flagship. It is a fine camera. Have a great day. Sarah Joyce |

Well, the WX1 is a continuation of the W series, right?

I believe the holes on top are for the speaker not the microphone but I could be wrong.
In the image below of the W290, you can see that the holes on the top are there as well. ![]() |

Maybe the WX1 incorporates both the mic and speaker using the same holes at the top. It makes more sense to have the mic at front, reason why I believe the W290 front holes are for the mic and the top for the speakers.

in the manual, the pic diagram details that the hole next to the lens on the wx1 is the microphone - the 3 holes on top is the speaker

Well, I am happy to report for would be buyers that indeed the Mic must be very similar or the same.
I tested it out with a very loud speaker system and it handled it perfect. Unlike the T900 which sounded like I was scraping a wool sweater on the microphone. |
