Using my W1 this morning it would just shut down out of the blue.

I thought the batteries might be at fault so I switched them out for a fresh set. The problem continued.

No matter what function I was in or what I did with it, in about 20 seconds after I restarted it it would turn right off.

I've had it about 90 days so I might be out of warranty also.

Any suggestions?

Shut down problem isn't happening in playback and set up modes. I was able to save and remove photosin memory prior to the problem. The battery indicator shows full power (on fresh batteries).

If I turn the mode dial on top of the camera toany other setting it acts as if the battery is near dead and shutsoffsoon or after a second or two.

Any thoughts?

Have you maybe set the auto turn off feature on? This would not turn the camera off in playback, pc connectionor set up mode but would in any other mode

I have exactly the same problem!

I just received my W1 today and I thought I would tool around using some brand new alkaline AAs while my NiMHs were charging up. The camera shut itself off after 20 or so seconds.

I just tried Setup mode and the camera did not power off. Just my damn luck to get a faulty camera. I am not impressed.

I am relieved to report that the camera is working just fine with the supplied NiMHs. Strange how it didn't like my cheap alkalines though...

Problem Solved: Batteries.

I had installed cheap Eveready batteries while my supplied Sony batteries were down. The next day the camera worked ok for a couple of shots then the problem.

This morning I recharged and installed the Sony batteries and the W-1 is working great.:|

The Sony W-1 apparently doesn't like anything but the best disposables.

Thanks for your help everyone.

I was gutted when I first got my camera and had this problem. Seems like the only guaranteed choice when it comes to alkalines is Duracell.

I agree Jim. The Duracell Ultra's seem to be the best.

Stay away from cheap batteries.

WalMart has "Digital" 2200 mah aa's for about $8.00. Be sure to look at the package, they all look the same.

Ihave the exact same problem.

I've had my W1 for over three years now and i've got 3 sets of Sony2100mAh NiMH batteries. It happens to all three sets even if i discharge the batteries before charging. They will only work if i use them straight after charging. Otherwise if i don't use a spare fully charged set for a few days, when the current set runs out (which is quite quick now mind you) and thenI replace it with the spare set, the camera just turns off.

My sister has the same problem with her W1 which is around 3 years old too.

When I first had the W1, the batteries lasted AGES. I hate this camera now.
