I bought a used S70 to keep in my car in case the unexpected shot apears. Everything seems to work fine, but there is a constant or near-constant whirring sound when the camera is on. Is this normal?

Ipurchased new,and the kids still use after 5+ years,a DSC S70.

Depends on what you mean by whirring ... if you have it turned on, it keeps trying to autofocus as you move the camera about. Onour (over-10,000 shots taken) S70, the sound is barely perceptable, but there is and always has been a slight sound as the focus motor works its magic.

Be careful to NOT block the lens movement at any time; the camera will usually need to be turned off, then back on, if you do so ... especially when first turning it on.
