Default Why the blurry DSC-P10 sample image?

I'm currently thinking of buying either the DSC-P10 or the Canon S400. I think the Sony would have it won because of the 5MP, but one of the sample photos here on steve's concerns me. Compare these two:

Look at the text on the spines of the magazines, etc. Is this a fluke, or is the Canon really that much sharper? Explanations, thoughts anyone?

Could it be that one of the modes put the focus on the center object in the p10 photo?
The whites are not as nicely balanced in that photo either. According to Steve's Dicams the P10 has a number of modes to balance the white color.

It is most likely the aperture setting of the camera when the photo was taken. The Sony's internal sofware may have picked a large aperture setting, this would have affected the camera's depth of field. Anything behind the main focal plane of the camera would come out softly focused.
