I had a 1 GB card in my 5D for the Drag Races. The frame counter shows 326 images available. Shooting on the second day the frame counter showed 117 left. I assumed I shot 199 frames. The actual images shot was 288. Can someone explain why the difference in the image count?

JPEG file sizes change based on image content. A detailed and colorful image may give you a larger file size compared to a less detailed image with fewer color graduations. Noise levels also impact jpeg file size.

IWO, it's only an estimate you're looking at. They have no way of accurately determining in advance how many jpeg images you'll be able to take with a given media size.
