The noise is most evident in shadows and areas of consistent color, showing artifacts and an unpleasent graininess.
I didn't do a lot of noise reduction because I was losing detail and images started looking mushy, lacking contrast and depth. But on every image I applied a value of 30 Color Noise Reduction in Camera Raw. Luminance Noise Reduction was set between 5 to 15, depending on the shot.

Noise is almost always pixels being brighter than they should be. Therefore, noise mostly only appears in darker areas. In addition, noise is almost indistinguishable from detail and texture, both to the unaided eye and to noise reduction techniques. Where noise is most evident is in darker, out-of-focus areas where there's no "detail" except that created by the noise.
![]() The amount of noise in the horse's coat is the same as in the out-of-focus woodgrain in the background, but the detail of the horse's coat hides the noise. Notice also that noise is more evident in the darker wood than in the lighter wood and the beige steel panels. Noise happens. Always. What changes is the conditions under which we notice it. At high ISOs, errant pixels are amplified more than inerrant pixels, so the difference between the errant and inerrant pixels becomes more noticeable.

Very usable IMO. Most shots can be cleaned up fairly easy.

But if you clean up the noise, you'll also lose detail. I'll keep the detail and suffer through some noise.

It depends. I'm not suggesting applying aggressive amounts of NR. With some mild NR, the loss in details may not be very noticeable unless the image is greatly cropped.

I already cleaned up the chroma noise. And applied a +5 luminance noise reduction.
Like TCAV, I can live with noise in most circumstances, detail is more important. But for night shots, I'd definitely NOT use an ISO bigger than 800.

Not nearly as good as the $6,000 D4. That post you are referring to (the basketball shots), the out of the camera shots are incredibly clean. For the A35 and any other camera you could convert them to black and white and they would be useable.
But in a pinch it's nice to have the option. I think 8X10 is pushing it though.

I've seen the A55 do pretty well at up to ISO 1600. I can't think of a reason for your A35 not to do as well.
