Attached is a real size crop from my 75-300mm lens, top right corner. Here is the exif info:

1/200 at f/8, focal length: 300mm (35mm equiv is 450mm)

Its a nice and cheap lens to close up on far away objects but I'm wondering if that violet halo is real.

In my experience it is real, especiallyaround a white or light colored object. It will normally only happen at the long end and will be most evident if you view it at 100% crop. This is one of the reasons that I put it away as soon as I got my 70-210/4 beercan, I don't seem to get any with the Beercan. Just my $0.02

As well as Photoshop, I also use Paint Shop Pro X. It has a fix for this. See screenshot below and the picture in that screenshot has the purple fringe removed. It's softened up some of the tarmac but you could create a mask around the person so it only adjusts the purple fringe in that area.

it's called 'chromatic abberation'

that's why they make APO lenses (apochromatic)

if you're careful with the lens use you can get (out of camera):

KM 7D with 75-300mm f4.5-5.6 @ 300mm (450 equiv)

bernabeu, is your 75-300 the older "big beercan" design? I can't see any chromatic aberration on mine at full zoom.
