Out with the BIG stuff

I rarely hike with my FF gear anymore. My NEX system is my light hiking kit but this week is the peek of the whale migration in the Los Angeles area and unfortunately, with the NEX system there is no equal to the 400mm lens available in A-mount. And with the E to A mount adapter you don't get any stabilization unless you bring a tripod and that was out of the question for this hike,

Here is a collection of images I took perched on a cliff about 75 feet above the ocean. Most shots were taken with the A900 and the 70-400 first version.

2. From the point this helicopter was nearly silent as it flew by very close to me,

3. The reason I was here. This pod was out about a 1 1/2 miles. I usually see them much closer but not when I bring my long lens. It figures.

4, I hiked down to the bottom of the cliff and along the rocks and caught this bird resting on this rock just as the sun was setting.

5. Turning to the south east the sky was very brilliant with the magentas and blues. There was a construction project going into the evening.

Beautiful pictures, Mike! The colors are phenomenal. That second whale shot shows the resolving power of that FF and a decent lens. The flocks of birds flying in the distance would have been invisible with lesser equipment, I'm afraid. These were definitely worth the hike!

Just thought you might find this humorous...we are expecting sleet and snow for the next two days here. High Tuesday mid-thirties...

Stay warm, my friend.

Good one. I am in East Texas watching the snow/freezing drizzle outside my office window.

Looks like a good day to settle in with a nice Single Malt and try to get some "cold shots" for the bi-weekly shootout.

What was the girl writing in the sand? It is easy to see why you like the camera so well. Love the dusk/night shots
